Gerwig: I think he will. I hope he does. I will always watch and love his movies. The movie we made is called Damsels In Distress. I play a character named Violet. It takes place at a liberal arts college on the East Coast and I run a suicide prevention centre where I help suicidal and depressed students overcome their tendencies through staging musicals with them, and teaching them how to tap dance and sing in musicals. And helping them dress well and wear nice perfume. And I have a congery of girls, that kind of follow me around. But then it's kind of the perils of love, and just these wonderfully eccentric characters.
Why else is it so bad? Well, let's look at the scenario it's positing. These are friends with benefits. We get that because of the title, the tagline, and the smug smiles. If they were attached, they would be touching, but they are casual and carefree. The woman (normally the clingy one) is walking away, showing her lack of commitment. "Oh please! It was good, but I don't need commitment! I'm a modern woman!" And how modern is she? Why, look at her clothing. She's wearing a mannish shirt! At first glance, I thought she was wearing his shirt, and I marveled at how magically tiny it had become after a night on the floor. Ah ha! You got me, No Strings Attached, you toyed with my deeply held notions of femininity! With her choice of shirt (as well as the pants you can dimly glimpse in the corner), you are saying, "Hey, this woman is of the 21st century. She works in a professional setting. She can be as crisp about business as she can be about sex." Indeed! Oh, but look at what lies at the foot of the bed. A high heel. She can live in a man's world, and by a man's rules, but she is still a woman. You could slap this picture on the next Susan Faludi book. It's that real.

Since forming in 1989, the Berlin-based Artemis Quartet has earned an international reputation as one of the most exciting and intellectual young string quartets on the concert circuit today. French filmmaker Bruno Monsaingeon offers a brief glimpse into the working methods and musical acumen of this renowned quartet in his 2001 film Strings Attached: Around Beethoven's Great Fugue, which profiles the quartet and documents their preparations for an April 2001 Paris recital. Packaged with footage of the recital, this new DVD carefully depicts the challenges, risks, and rewards of chamber music and offers valuable insight into the complex nature of musical collaboration.
Strings Attached concludes with the Artemis Quartet's 2001 performance of Beethoven's Große Fuge, which confirms the value of such a detailed approach by presenting a nuanced performance of this dense work that reveals not only its extraordinary counterpoint but its manic emotional range without sounding overwrought or hysterical. The second film, culled from the same Paris recital, gives further evidence that their approach yields interesting musical experiences that gratify intellectually and emotionally, particularly in their readings of Beethoven's Op. 18, No. 2 quartet and Webern's Six Bagatelles, Op. 6. Monsaingeon skillfully directs the viewer's attention toward the subtle communicative acts that are required to create a convincing musical message, using tight shots to capture the eye movements of the individual musicians and wide-angle shots to highlight the interpersonal dialogue of more conversational passages. As a result, this DVD stands not only as an insightful portrait of one of the most engaging contemporary string quartets but as required viewing for anyone who seeks to understand the complex processes of musical collaboration.
