JewelCAD is a computer-aided jewelry design and manufacturing software package. jewelCAD is used by professionals and hobbyists that work in the jewelry industry to design and model jewelry, gemstones and diamonds that can be manufactured with common metal smithing techniques such as forging, casting, soldering, granulation, straightening and polishing. It also includes a library of clip art images of commonly found metal settings such as bezels for gemstones. The purpose of JewelCAD is to provide an easy-to-use interface for designing jewelry without any special training or knowledge of professional modeling languages such as Rhinoceros 3D or CAD CAM. JewelCAD provides tools for drawing shapes, importing images, creating patterns and textures, setting colors and materials, executing Boolean operations on shapes (union, intersection, difference) to create new shapes, boolean operations on multiple selected objects (addition), selection sets (for example to group like components), surface modeling using Boolean operations with the built-in Booleans (trim surfaces by intersecting solids), an easy-to-use 3D grid system for symmetry work which can be adjusted to account for symmetrical distortions of model dimensions due to the manufacturing process (in this case loss of metal during casting or lost weight during soldering), dimensioning tools for geometric objects such as spheres (where the radius is not proportional due to slicing) and so. The JewelCAD modeling package is delivered with a menu-guided Quick Start Tutorial and an extensive reference manual containing usage and configuration information about the package. It also includes a selection of tutorials and exercises.jewelCAD was originally developed in Visual Basic by Gary Heptig in 1997 under the name GemBlade. It is currently developed in C++ using WTL (Window Toolkit Library). It is licensed under GNU General Public License Version 2.0. 4th generation development began in 2005, and version 5 was released in 2010. Periodically, Heptig releases new versions of JewelCAD with improved features or performance, usually once every year or two. There are several release levels of JewelCAD, with the level of complexity growing as the user progresses through the levels. JewelCAD is available in different packages for different markets. The core product is free of charge to hobbyists, educational users and small business users, but professional business users must purchase a license for use on their production machines, or sign up for an annual fee for remote machine usage. The main modules included in JewelCAD are:A number of additional features can be found in various configurations of the various packages. These include:The community edition is aimed at students and hobbyists who want to learn how to use CAD software as well as those who want to design jewelry as a pastime. It allows a user to save a design in a zip file, and it also has a limited selection of predefined settings available. This edition is aimed at people who want to make jewelry for small groups of customers or family members, or who wish to learn how to use CAD software in conjunction with manufacturing techniques such as casting and soldering. It has all the features of JewelCAD LE, plus more functionality and tools, allowing designs intended for larger production runs. This includes the ability to export designs in 3D format file types that can be produced by manufacturer equipment. This edition is aimed at industry professionals making a full-time income from producing jewelry. eccc085e13
